Pregnancy Massage

So much is changing in your body during pregnancy and often discomfort or pain arises from your body shifting its centre of gravity, size and hormones. Often any areas of tension or ‘problem’ areas you had before becoming pregnant become aggravated during pregnancy, so that something you barely noticed is suddenly causing you a good deal of pain.
The good news is, after giving birth, most of the pain and discomfort corrects itself, however certain conditions that arise can linger for months to years, and seeking treatment can help.
What you can do: Keep moving. Moderate exercise can keep muscles from becoming too tight and stiff, but don’t overdo it. Things like walking, yoga and pilates can be very beneficial, especially when classes are geared toward pregnant clients. It’s usually safe to continue a regular exercise routine, but generally not advised to try something new, or amp up your regular routine too much. To know what’s safe for you, ask your doctor or midwife.
Seeking treatment: Massage therapy is a safe way to relieve discomfort arising from pregnancy and your RMT will know how to gear the treatment to your needs in the safest way possible for you and the baby. It can help with sciatic pain, calf cramps, rib pain and tightness, back pain, headaches, etc. Depending on your RMT and how advanced you are, you will either be lying on your side for most of the treatment, or on a pregnancy pillow that allows you to lie face down while giving enough room and support for the baby.
If you feel you need more than what massage and your own self care can provide, chiropractors can also offer a great deal of relief while providing safe and effective treatments. Do your research and find one that is good for you.
